The Darkness Comes

The darkness comes

In dreams aboard a day...
I blink just once,
and find they come
to carry me away.
But at times they linger long;
the darkness comes
and hides the sun
I feel so far and gone.
They sometimes help me sleep;
but often not, they keep me woke
like a slowly settled heat.
Just once they made me weep;
but then again, they help me rise
and hope for me it keeps.
It is a smile I hide...
for ice-cold lakes,
simple fates
and funny little lies.
I can see it sometimes true-
a little kiss
upon the lips
of a baby wrapped in blue.
They are me through and through,
and for all he made,
I'd never trade,
my memories of you.
