INSPIRING DAILY CHANGE
Convicts ask me regularly how they can change their situation. Prisoners working toward peace and social change seem to share part of my answer. I say, "keep both oars in the water". Prisons are not breeding grounds for a quick fix -- they're not set up this way, hence the phrase, "the wheels of justice turn slow".
When seeking social change, one must act in harmony with the values toward that which is sought. Gandhi couldn't have said it better, "Be the change you seek". If it's peace you're after, work toward peace; don't just rally against war.
In lieu of harboring negative images of people who support different causes than yours, focus on what it is that moves you. Set a course that aligns itself with the values at issue and do your part to maintain the integrity of the path you're carving.
This is the beginning of social change -- making a conscious effort to find that which empowers your environment. Prison, regardless of one's sentence, shouldn't preclude growth. There are several ways to meet our needs in life, the key is in harmony and connection.
