THE X-FACTOR
I watched the X-Factor last night because Taylor Swift was giving a special performance. She was absolutely beautiful and her performance was amazing, as usual.
I was disappointed by Demi Lovato. I've loved her ever since she starred in Camp Rock and my then girlfriend/arch-nemesis Kaitlyn twisted my arm to watch it with her. But she is clearly a biassed judge.
There was a sing-off between two contestants, a white girl named Giselle and a black girl names Paige. Both were very good. But it was obvious that Paige gave a much better performance.
Giselle's notes were a little flat, and she lacked emphasis and volume. So she sounded a bit lackluster. Paige hit all the right notes and she had a much richer and more soulful voice. She was still a bit placid and she clipped her words short at the end of the phrase, but she obviously won the sing-off hands down.
It should have been unanimous, but Demi was obviously biassed in favor of Giselle because she had a thing for her and wanted her to win. You could tell by the look on her face during the performances that she knew Paige won, but she didn't want to accept it because of her personal feelings for Giselle.
So Demi gave her a sympathy vote after all the other judges voted for Paige. I also saw her put her arm around Giselle and whisper in her ear. I could picture her taking Giselle home to console her after the show.
So while I love Demi Lovato, I'm not sure she has the proper sense of objectivity to judge other people's performances.
I also have to say that there are far too many commercial breaks and far too much phony dramatics on the show. Greed has its limits, and cut the bullshit please. Let's focus on the singing.
