Father's Day Story
Phone Justice

It has been very difficult to call home on Father's Day or any day for that matter. I think I've only called them 4 times in the last 23 years of my incarceration. My parents are elderly and have no money other than my Dad's retirement and that barely gets them by. Sometimes they could not accept my collect calls - which did break my heart and I'm sure they were not too happy about it either. My parents live in Maine and I'm incarcerated in California. No I can not call as I'd like to, see prisons allow inmates in state prisons to purchase card calling phone that inmates would be able to purchase. It would save our people having to foot the bill. It's been a burden not being able to say I love you to my Dad, and just to hear his voice. I miss you too. I hope that the government will read this. But I honestly say I've lost faith in their intervention of prisons. Here in California prisons, rehabilitation is just a word that casually wets our state assembly members. Really they could care less if we have family ties. For government, change is a word left in fairy tales.

Hi, James

I am writing to let you know about Prison Action News, a biannual journal of prisoners' stories of resistance to incarceration. Written by prisoners and edited and distributed by outside volunteers, PAN has about 1,600 incarcerated subscribers across the US. It is a great outlet to both read and publish stories about fighting exorbitant phone prices, or any other oppressive aspect of prison life. If you would like a free subscription to PAN, write to:
