California On Blast
(California's Death Penalty Scheme)

Only 2% of counties in the United States are responsible for the majority of the nation's death row population. Of the twelve counties with the most death sentences, seven of them are in California.

Of the 58 counties in California, Los Angeles County sends the most people to death row. Los Angeles is among the ten counties in California* responsible for the vast majority of death sentences in the state.

Over the last decade, with death sentences decreasing throughout California and the nation, these ten counties account for an even higher percentage of people in California's death row, with Los Angeles County remaining on the top.

Although Texas executes more people than any other state, Los Angeles County leads the nation in death sentences, responsible for placing 228 individuals on death row. As of 2013, more than double that of second-place Harris County, Texas.

*The ten counties are Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Alameda, Orange, Contra Costa, San Diego, Sacramento, Tularo, and Ventura Counties.

Stories have shown that the geographical location rather than the specific factors relevant to the crime determine whether a defendant lives or dies. Under the California death penalty scheme, some defendants will be chosen as candidates for the death penalty by one prosecutor while others with similar charges in a different county or even the same county will not.

Condemned Case Files
*File No. COB118
*Case No. SO87533
