Of all the different changes a guy has to make in adjusting to prison life, there is one change that many times gets done for him: the changing of his name. Whether it be done by choice or totally against his will, there's about a 58% chance that he will be appointed a nickname. What exactly is a nickname? Well, according to my dictionary, it's a familiar or humorous name given to a person instead of or as well as the real name. Okay, that seems simple enough. But just what causes these names to suddenly materialize and literally take over a guy's legalized title that he was practically born with?
Well, from my observation, there appears to be five different reasons for which a particular nickname will be designated to a person.
1. According to his appearance. (32%)
2. Because of something he's done or still does. (25%)
3. Due to certain characteristic features he has. (17%)
4. It might be based on his real name somehow. (10%)
5. Just downright don't know. (15%)
To get an idea of some of the new names an individual will take on, I've made a list of 40 different names I've come across that I can remember. Try and see if you can categorize each name with the correct reason of designation. It's not always going to be a logical answer. That's why I've taken it upon myself to do some explaining after you've tried your hand at guessing where these nicknames materialized from.

I was just writing the reply to another letter of yours, but I wanted to do the name quiz-thingy. :D
38 - Maybe he (all are guys right?) has a big tattoo with 38 on it! I just hope he hasn't killed 38 people..
Big Jit - I had to google what a jit is for this one. Maybe he's been in prison since he was really young and now he got big..?:(
Block - He's probably really ripped!
Butterball - And he's a little more.. large? Or his favorite food is turkey!
Candy Man - I would like to think that he's just really sweet. Buuuuut that's a little unlikely. Maybe it's referencing to something sexual, like the song 'Candy Shop' from 50 cent...
Checker Bill - I have no idea!
Chicken Wing - Maybe he stole a lot of Chicken Wings??? And is he black? - Sorry if that's racist!!
Country - Maybe he was a farmer. :)
Cowboy - Same as above!
Day-Day - Uh... I have no idea.
Double D - Another really bulky person maybe?
Elmer Fudd - Did he shoot someone with a rifle? Noooooo. :(
Fish - Someone new in prison? Got that from the series Prison Break...:)
Fluff - I don't know why that'd be a nickname but it's really cute! Maybe he has nice, fluffy hair.
Goldfish - Same as fish? Maybe he's rich. Or robbed a bank.
GQ - Ouh... No idea! Maybe he's good at fashion-stuff.
Greedy - I assume he's pretty greedy... :P
Hawk - Maybe his hair reminds people of a Hawk.
Head - No clue!
Hollywood - Was he famous when he was put behind bars?
Honeybun - Trans?
Hustle Man - Did he sell drugs?
Ice House - Owned a Ice-truck and kidnapped little kids with it. (Hope I'm wrong)
Jewel - Maybe he stole expensive jewelery?
Knuckle Head - Sounds kinda scary, but I don't know where that could come from.
Lollipop - Let's people suck his..... uhhhhh
Lurch - Maybe he looks like a frog.
Maze - Ha, I know that one!:P He's someone who draws really cool labyrinths. :)
Money - Rich person!
Mouse - A quite little person? Or
New York - Probably not the reason for his name but is he from New York?
Peewee - It's probably because of the movie! Haven't watched it though.
Radio Man - Newscaster maybe?
Ranger - Maybe he shot someone in the woods.
Shotgun - Same..?
Skillet - Hell, I don't know, but he has the name of one of my favorite bands so that's pretty cool!
Squirrel - Maybe he's really hyperactive.
Tammy - Ouuh, his real name is probably similar to the nickname.
Tanya - Trans!..?
X-Man - Did he like to cosplay?
Sooooooo, that are my guesses. I'm probably wrong in 99% of them, haha.
