Good Morning! I was watching the Florida Channel Friday April 24 and witnessed the passing of the amendment on SB-7020 on the body camera pilot program here at union correction Institution (UCI) word is going around that its only going to be implemented in U and V dorm and not in the entire prison. I'm hoping this is not the case. We need every officer here at UCI to be equipped with body cameras. Right now I'm currently facing verbal threats and sexual harassment by a sgt as a result of filing grievances. Body cameras would prevent this. Here in P-Dorm in the past 5 years there's been numerous officer on inmate assaults. I was assaulted twice in May of 2012 for writing about prison abuse, Olan Gorby, Seburt Conner, Troy Merck, Ray Johnston, Carolton Francis, Gady Mccray, Michael Robinson are just a few of the names off the top my head who have been assaulted. There was illegal gassing of inmates in secure cells. Illegal strip cells among the many other abuses One inmate from population was thrown down the stair case here in P-Dorm while working over here. Another office place an inmate in handcuffs and threw a plastic bag over his head. My point is we need these body cameras here in P-Dorm.
Right now this sgt who's a recreation sgt who's threatening and harassing me is doing so because I've reported the fact that he sleeps on the rec yard leaving death row inmates unsupervised. For the past 5 years he's changed inmates 3 to 4 in canteen items in order to get extra recreation time. I'll enclose my grievance on recreation and the rules 33-601, 800 and (page 2 of 2) 33-601, 830. I'm trying to get more out of cell time that 2 recreation sessions a week. Where 33-601,830 (7) (i) for doing this I'm facing acts of reprisal. Yes that's against the rules of conduct 33-208,002 F.A.C, but this is a corrupt lawless dept. If warden Andrews was not here, they would be jumping one me. She's not putting up with it. Although she's not stopping them from this verbal assault. We have a sgt in this building whose making hundreds of dollars a month selling cell moves, among the other unethical things that he does. The body camera will stop that. There's stuff going on that would blow your mind! I've been fighting for positive change for the past 6 years. Yes the body camera will hurt a lot of inmates who are buying drugs, food, cigarettes, pornography and other contraband from correctional officers, but it'll install some much needed honour and integrity to a very corrupt and unethical dept.
What we really need is a bill requiring staff to take annual polygraph exams stating that they are upholding the rules of conduct 33-208,002 and it's governing laws. Making sure they are not introducing contraband or abusing inmates. The only officer or union members who will have a problem with this are those unethical immoral officers who need to be weeded out. Rep Rouson please see that the body cameras are implemented on every officer here at UCI. Thank you very much for you time and hopefully your help.
