Last Night's Dreams

the time behind us
will never end
the imaginary will linger
like the beasts

of a snow-covered mountain
embracing every waking hour
swamped in the brightness
of a billion suns

beyond the gates of my hell
the landscape is different
altered to hide the pain
the pathway underfoot designed

with none of the grasses of dreams
where on hands and knees
we crawl back to the heart
whatever spell you put on me

there is no peace with it
I beg you to renew it
so where were you last night
what did you do today

it's now Monday dawn
dreams as spiders as my thoughts
like paint running off the canvas
at midnight I was in my underwear

in a corner bargain basement
coins falling out of my mouth
good night to all the dreamers
alone in an empty cell
