Hi Nikki,
Australia!.....Wow!
I fully expected that you would be as far away as Tennessee perhaps, but all the way around the world blows my mind. Nikki, I do hope that we become friends, it would be something to be able to tell people that I have a friend from, "The Land Down Under" :)!
Congratulations on you pending acquisition of your degree. I think it is wonderful that you decided to pursue a professional career as a single mom. You are setting a wonderful example for your children.
Right now I am working at a place that packages frozen veggies. Most jobs that are available to inmates on work release are low skill, basic labor jobs. Now you asked me what am I getting out of personally: The most obvious benefit is that it allows me to save funds that will ease my transition back into society. At the same time I am learning some useful work habits and building up my work ethic. I am also padding my resume against such a long incarceration (I have been down 15 years on a non-violent drug charge).
Nikki, I do deal with some negative attitudes, but most people are decent and treat us like regular workers. Prison is full of negative attitudes so I have been well prepared dealing with inmates. Besides, doing well on work release is the main avenue for me getting out prison sooner than later, so my incentive to ignore the noise is optimal.
Thank you for taking out time of your busy schedule to show interest and respond to my writing.
Stay positive.
Ezra
