Do I smell a poetess?
Excellent association! Yes, our fates are ours to make, rather than the effects of a sneaky, spiritual God. Only once we realise this, particularly those in power (e.g. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Obama, down to local judges, lawyers, bureaucrats), can we create a kinder, gentler, more...happy (?) reality. One of the core ironies of those who believe in a spiritual God, particularly Christians, Muslims and Jews, is that in relying solely on God to fix things, things get worse, which they take as a sign that God is testing or punishing them, thus they believe in their God more fervently, taking even loss responsibility for their and our fates, resulting in things getting worse, which they take as proof of the end of the world and imminent return of the Messiah, God's will, so things get even worse... it's a vicious cycle that's went on for thousands of years.
Never read that book you mentioned, The Dark Is Rising, and I really don't have the time to, and certainly can't purchase it to read it. Will you please tell us more about it though? Fiction, non-fiction, author, and a summary?
I'm always thrilled at readers "getting" me, as you did and look forward to more of your comments.
See my earlier posts! They're not dated/old and also well-written.
Sincerely, Nate

The basic plotline is that there's a "race" of immortals on the side of absolute good who exist to defend the world and humanity from the agents of absolute evil. At the end of the series, the agents of evil are banished from the world, and so all but one of the agents of good take themselves off out of the world too because they're no longer needed. And one of them delivers the speech I borrowed that line from, to a group of youngsters who've been helping him.
