A Cold Truth
by Jeremy Pinson
At 27 years old I realized out of the blue today a cold truth about life. The problems of our society will never end. There will be landmarks that mark the progress of a maturing society but human nature is the same today as it was in the time of Aristotle and Socrates. If I fought for change every day of my life I would not change everything and it's possible I would never change anything. Of course I know I have changed lives and even laws in my brief 27 years but the major things will be the same in 27 more years and nothing I do alone will change this. I can only hope others will come to believe as I do and act to make this world more peaceful, more just, and more compassionate. But I also must learn to accept that some things likely will not change in my lifetime. And that is like being doused with ice water during a nice hot shower. A real shock to the mind. Not enough to stop me but enough to lead me to stare at the night sky out my window and wonder how many others in the hectic society we live in also know this cold truth.
