RE: Article in newspaper CDCR-Spokesman (Post)

I was reading a newspaper article the other day and came across a reporter's interview with a prison spokesman for the San Francisco Chronicle.

The spokesman said that there is no prisoners in the SHU that have been in the SHU (Security Housing Unit) more than thirty years, and said he knows that for a fact. The reporter told him that they know of at least one prisoner who has been in SHU for forty years.

I don't know why that spokesman would lie like that, because I have a little over 30 years in SHU. Not all here in Pelican Bay, but in other SHUs before this one was built. So all together I've been in the SHU around 32 years. So I don't know where he gets his information from but it's wrong. I also know quite a few other guys back here that have 30-plus years in the SHU.

Most of us know each other because we've all been in SHUs together. We are in a unique league of our own, once there were thousands of us, now only a few hundred remain of the old guard. A lot of these guys are very old and sick, I see them at Medical looking old and frail.

I wonder what the difference is between being in SHU 30 years and 40 years, it's still a hell of a long time in segregation.

Only a prison official could come up with a line like that, trying to make 30 years seem like 30 days, and can't be bad.
