RE: Changes Coming In Parole Hearings

I read an article in the San Francisco Chronicle earlier today regarding the California prison overcrowding problem, which was ordered by the U.S. Supreme Court to be fixed by CDCR officials by the end of the year. Prison officials have fought this tooth and nail, asking for more time to comply and claiming that it's not as bad as before. But the court doesn't want to hear excuses, they want results.

Overcrowding has been the cause of inmates dying for lack of medical treatments. Others are forced to endure pain for months, even years.

I can attest to that. I did something to my knee. They said nothing was wrong, but I could not even stand up or walk. And it hurt really bad. That lasted for about two years. It's better now. But no thanks to these people; they wouldn't even give me an ice wrap. I had to use a torn T-shirt to tie up my leg. They don't want us to have anything and refuse to give us anything. No wonder inmates are dying.

Finally, after a lot of pressure and because they have no other choice, they decided to set an inmate's sentence to determine how much time he must serve. This is what they were supposed to do but never did. I have been in here for 30 years. Others have been in prison 40 years, and none of us know when we will ever be let out.

But finally a court has decided enough is enough. California's justice system has been using its prison system for employment purposes. More prisons means more jobs, so keep inmates in prison for as long as possible. This is good news for a lot of us that have been in prison way too long.
