Alberto (ITALY)
It was a pleasure transcribing your letter.
Now I will tell you something about Italy. Although Italy was unified in 1861, there are still differences between its twenty regions. Mainly the differences are between the northern regions, the central regions and the southern regions. The northern regions are more industrialized and richer. In the northern regions, however, there are not only industries and companies, there are also beautiful historical cities that have interesting monuments. The main and largest city in northern Italy is Milan with 1.4 million inhabitants.
Milan is also the economic center of Italy as a whole, it is certainly the most important Italian city from an economic and financial point of view. Geographically, Northern Italy is divided into two parts, in the northernmost part, on the border with France, Switzerland and Austria, there are the mountain ranges (the Alps with the highest mountain in Europe, Mont Blanc). The central part of Northern Italy is flat, there is a large plain crossed by the Po River. Historically, Northern Italy has been divided for centuries into three states: the Kingdom of Piedmont, the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice. As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
Best regards.
Alberto (Italy).
Thanks for your message, it is a pleasure to hear from you. I'm answering your questions, a little late because I have been on vacation.
I spent 12 days at Lake Garda which is located in the north of Italy. It's a magnificent place, tourists come from all over Europe to see it, there are also tourists who come from your country.
We don't celebrate the 4th of July in Italy because it's a US holiday.
Italy's national holidays are April 25, which commemorates the end of World War II and the Nazi-Fascist dictatorship, and June 2, Republic Day, when in 1946 Italians voted in a referendum to choose between a Republic and a Monarchy, and the majority of Italians chose a Republic as their form of government.
On April 25th, there are many events to commemorate and celebrate the end of the war and the return of freedom.
Today I would like to talk to you about Italy's rivers and lakes. The fact that Italy has few plains is also due to the lack of large rivers. The longest river in Italy is the Po, which rises in Piedmont. The Po passes through several important cities, including Turin, flows along the Po Valley, and finally reaches the Adriatic Sea. It is approximately 45 miles long. Other important rivers include the Adige, which flows through Trentino and Veneto, the Tiber, which flows through Rome, and the Arno, which flows through Florence. Italy, however, has many lakes. The most famous and largest are in Northern Italy, near the Alps.
These are Lake Garda (the largest in Italy), Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, and Lake Iseo. My favourite lake is Lake Garda; it's close to my city, so whenever I can, I always go there for a break. The southern part of the lake is fairly flat and has some sandy beaches, while the northern part is mountainous: you can admire fantastic views of the mountains overlooking the lake.
It's been incredibly hot in Italy these days temperatures reach 95/97 degrees F with a lot of humidity. It's called "African" heat because it's brought by an anticyclone that's normally positioned in North Africa and has moved over Europe.
I guess it is hot in the prison where you are, I believe it is difficult to bear for you inmates.
Best regards,
Alberto
