God's Story For Us

September 2, 2014

Human beings are affectionate creatures who love stories. Especially tales of true love and heroism. It's perplexing how many of us overlook the story God has written for us...and some only pay attention when tragedy engulfs us or we stumble upon wealth.

Winston Churchill one famously claimed that history was simply "one...thing after another." In other words, he claimed that there's no story behind our life experiences, only a series of events.

Now for me, events are places you attend like seminars, banquets, black tie, and fundraisers. Stories of life are personal journeys you share with friends or a conversation piece on a second date. But again, that's just my view. All great minds don't always think alike!

Few things are more deadening to our souls than thinking our lives ultimately mean little more than "one thing after another." Yet that's exactly how prison life feels; 24 hrs. looped on a continuous basis. So on many days my life story, when expressed to others, always ends here in prison.

Of course, I ultimately put myself in this agonizing position, but it can seem a bit presumptuous to think there's some master plan behind these dark clouds surrounding me.

The Bible tells us that the experiences of our lives make sense because they are part of a much larger story. A story written for each of us while we developed in our mother's womb. (Psalm 139:13-17)

the struggles of last month or the victories that we may claim in the upcoming weeks are not simply chance occurrences. They are part of a story line that is going somewhere. The work we do, the people we share life with, our abilities and weaknesses we struggle with are all part of a collection of elements intended to make for a really good story - the story of you. God's Story For Us.

Write about recent books you have read. I'm reading "Darkness at Noon" by Arthur Koestler at the moment, it's about a man in prison solitary confinement.
