Dear Gary,
Thank you so much for beautiful words.
I think incarcerated transpeople should have a choice where they are housed and who they are housed with, as long as it is safe for all involved. I must give a little credit to California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR); they just implemented a new policy for trans to be able to present their gender of choice. We can now purchase makeup, undergarments, etc. It was a huge step for CDCR. They also now do (SRS). Up to this point, if I had any kind of makeup, it was considered escape paraphenalia. All of this was not done because they finally had an epiphany and wanted to make life easier for trans inmates. It was all the result of lawsuits by trans inmates, but who cares? We're recognized, now, and it can only get better.
You, my dear, are the future of the trans movement, and I find that inspiring and I admire you. I'm so happy that you have not let others define who and what you can be. It's not an easy journey, but it is oh so rewarding. When you make friends, you know they are real because they love and care for you, not your ability to conform to norms.
It's not easy maneuvering the complexities of trans life, like job, housing, ID, but there is a strong support network out there and, as long as you are strong and resilient (as I'm sure you are :) ), you'll do fine.
I have contacts in California. If you're interested, let me know.
I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.
Lots of love,
Terra
