Boy Play Outside

in my youth
I let the silence
begin my mornings
standing in doorways
of old wooden barns
gasoline burning in
five gallon cans
fighting off the chill
as the rain pours
off rusty tin roofs
the wind blowing
between the cracks of
the wall boards
alone with my brothers
laughing like fools
chasing a pig across
high running cheek
through muddy fields
never feeling the cold

halfway home

I was halfway home
when I made that last turn
for some no-good reason
all of me going south
through deserted streets
one foot moving
in front of the other
behind me lies
the family I love
white house picket fence
unable to turn back
I cross the street
rounded the corner
finding myself behind
tall walls with barbed wire
I could have used common sense
turned around walked away
but I did neither
so here I stand
hidden behind barbed wire walls
