No Inmate Heat Pass

by Steve J. Burkett (author's profile)

Transcription

Frozen in Time

there are no visible chains
to weigh me down
with the million of other bodies
piled against the wall
trapped inside prison cells
listening to the clock ticking
in the prison quiteness
the years moving slowly by
with the movement of a secondhand
all the could ofs, would ofs, should ofs
will not change the past
we are frozen here in this moment
filled with the memories
of days gone by
toward the end of time

Sign

the sign reads
air conditioned winds
a polar bear
in a guard's uniform
standing at each end
the back door locked
with a sign lit in red
letters forming the words
fire exit—call 911 for key
the windows are barred
the table, the desk, the bed
all made with American steel
there is a fire burning
somewhere inside me
in this moment I wait
to cool my disobedient body
