Female Guard Visually Raped Me

August 2012: I was admitted into CTC, our prison's medical hospital in Corcoran, California. I was taken there for evaluation.

I immediately couldn't help notice the filthy conditions that existed there. You'd expect a hospital to be immaculate. But this story is not about cleanliness, it's about disrespect to male inmates in general. One in particular incidence stands out more than other days that I stayed in the prison hospital.

I was escorted by a female guard to an area that inmates shower in. There were two separate shower rooms with windows and a tray slot in the door. Once she locked me in there, she ordered me to take off my boxers and give it to her. I immediately stripped and handed her my shorts. Ms. [redacted] stood there and sized me up, and then she got me a toothbrush and tooth powder. I thought it was a bit strange because she stood outside the door watching me shower. When I finished, she popped the tray slot and hands me a towel, all while she watched. When I was dry, she asked for my wet towel and I embarrassingly hand it to her. Then she gave me some clean boxers and smiled.

Male nudity is nothing new in prison. But imagine this: would you want some strange female watching your father shower? That's what you get for prison fathers and brothers exposed to female guards taunting when they're nude.

At Avenal, a prison in California, is all dorm living (minimum security). But they are treated worse than a high-level security inmate. There is no modesty sections. The showers are out in the open, and female guards are stationed on a podium no more than five feet from the showers. I'm sure these females don't consider themselves as perverts because they were hired into the department. Such lewd behavior in the free world would warrant an arrest. CDC is not setting good examples and never does a logical option.

No inmates get raped in showers. That is a Hollywood concept. Rapes occur in cell block living. So why not put modesty walls in these shower areas? And why would women accept working under such conditions? I believe that female guards like it because it empowers them in a safe environment while they get to enjoy the sexual exploitations of nude males.

I've been wanting to leave a reply on this post but have been thinking for the last few hours about what to say. I knew immediately that what you described here was wrong, but my mind wasn't processing it, not the way I wanted to make sense of what you said at least. It seems to be easier to comprehend if I switch the genders... a female prisoner, being watched by a male guard - then it makes sense in my mind how wrong it is.

Then I think about 'that' & the way I needed to process your pain and I realise that's how we're conditioned, so then I'm left thinking about how wrong THAT is also. Obviously sexual harrassment is sexual harrassment in all its forms!

I guess a prison sentence means losing 2 things immediately, the first being freedom and the second privacy but what you've described here is more than that. You have to consent to losing your privacy but you should never have to trade your dignity (which is how I have understood what you're saying here).

What you describe is definately a power imbalance and it seems that at the very least, these female guards need re-training. It's one thing to do your job and all it entails, but it's another to violate someone's dignity in that process. I am sorry this has happened to you. It's not ok.
