Reprisal

Reprisal

Imagine, if you will, Birmingham, Alabama
Nineteen-sixty three
Martin telephones Malcolm in urgency,
My brother, he spiel, "We must come
together on the issues, in which we disagree."

I'm no pacifist, I'm a man of power, yet
I've led this struggle without reprisal
I was informed at this very hour, another
Church has been bombed, four children died.
Something must be done, we're now debating
use of the gun.

My brother, Malcolm replied, I've been apprised
of your recent troubles, I'm now in conference
with thousands of brothers,
Who came from down south, and willing
to return, whenever you decide, to straighten
our business out.

It would be a travesty, if we don't use this
occasion, to fight for freedom, justice, equality
and self-determination.
