Sowing Good Seed
The Scriptures are constantly exhorting us to do charitable works—reach out to help, forgive the weaknesses of others, be kind and offer encouragement. I aspire to practice these works and sow good seed amongst the men I'm surrounded by each day here in prison. But the thought always remains with me: Am I sowing good seed in a field filled with rocks, thorns, and tares?
Oftentimes my good seeds seem unappreciated and unproductive, but I must not be discouraged or discontinue my efforts. Prison is society's wasteland filled with future men of repentance. And if my good seed can lead them to God, then... I feel I have played my part.
What helps my discouragement in not being able to witness my good seed take root is seed rejects the rush-hour mentality, instant answers, and immediate results society we live in.
They operate the old-fashioned way—taking their time. They establish their roots, grow a little each day, and eventually blossom into something of true value. They teach me to be patient and to trust that if I have planted good seeds, hidden progress is already taking place.
