New Attitude, New Choices
They made kings, but not by my authority; they established princes, but without my approval. (Hosea 8:4)
"Every nation gets the government it deserves," concluded an 18-century philosopher. It would seem that his conclusion would be accurate only in Democratic nations. What of countries run by autocratic despots? Do people unfortunate enough to have been born into societies wracked with violence and terror deserve to live without the most basic of human rights?
The prophet Hosea's words give me pause today to consider carefully how we, as a nation, choose our local and national leaders while, at the same time, how I choose to exercise my role as a global citizen.
Specifically, as a Christian, my world view must be characterized by its universal scope. It is not enough for me to simply enjoy the rights and privileges that my country has afforded me by the location of my birth.
By my thoughtful civic choices, I must work to ensure that others everywhere may someday experience the dignity of being human and the rights and responsibilities that this gift implies. Without my new Christ-like attitude, I would not have been able to conjure up these new thoughtful choices. Praise God.
