"MEMORIAL DAY" 5/25/2015
A good, if sad, day to remember. For most men in this prison it's just another day. Those of us whom are veterans try to help others understand today's importance. Four days ago our Graham Vet group had our annual Memorial Day meeting. It went really well. Most of us feel it was our best meeting. Six months in the planning to coordinate, rehearse and invite many guests to our first "Flag Folding Memorial".
Unlike previous years we have more I.D.O.C staff, and those with authority, supporting our veterans. One Warden is a vet and both of the other 2-Wardens are pro-vet. Our greatest support has come from our Chaplain, U.S. Army, who has beared the greatest burden to organize and plan the Graham Vets success.
A new idea proposed by our coordinator corrections officer J. Stewart and voted unanimously in favor, is to install a flag pole in the prison court yard. The Graham Vets would bear the responsibility of raising and lowering colors every morning and evening. The wardens have already approved this effort. Our hurdle now is locating and purchase a proper flag pole for use inside a prison? An exposed rope being the main security concern. So a pole with a hidden lanyard (line)?
One great suggestion by my brother Dale T. was to use a counter weighted drop pole. Similar to this:
Does anyone know if something like this is available on the market?
We also published our first 2015 newsletter. I mailed out 6-copies including to B+B. I hope someone scanned it and posted it online
