Great News!
The old man is dead! My old man, and yours if you've accepted God's gift of redemption. You see, Scripture tells us that death is the penalty of sin (Romans 6:23) and that all have sinned (Romans 3:23). So God sent His Son to live as a perfect man and willingly go to the cross of Calvary to shed His precious blood in full atonement for our sins. God's gift to us all! But we only receive the benefits of this gift when we receive it by faith. It is then that Scripture calls us "new creations" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
In fact, Jesus has rescued all of His followers from eternal death, whether they were once extremely wicked like me or conventionally good like you. Hallelujah! And the natural response to this undeserved forgiveness is overflowing love that permeates our new life. We walk in newness of life out of a newness of heart, for out of the heart are the issues of life. And like the old Bible scholar Matthew Henry says: "There is not way to make the stream sweet but by making the spring so." Therefore, we now walk by new rules, toward new ends, from new principles (beliefs). In other words, we no longer think the same way, talk the same way, act the same way, nor associate with those who do. Old things have passed away and all things have become new.
True, none of that erases ANY of my past choices, but it sure does affect all the choices I make today and in the future. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "I may not yet be the man I should be, or the man with Christ's help I someday will be, but thank God I'm not the man I used to be."
