Houston (AK) council fires chief, leaving town with no police

HOUSTON—The Houston City Council voted this week to fire its police chief in a move that essentially leaves the troubled town without a police department.
The move Tuesday night comes after the resignation of the department's two officers.
Capt. Charley McAnally was dismissed by a 4-2 vote of the council, according to KTUU-TV. The dismissal came after McAmally alleged in March that he had collected evidence that the city's mayor and treasurer have committed felony crimes, and sent the evidence to the FBI. He joined the Houston Police Department in October 2009 and became head of the department several months ago.
McAnally's removal is the latest in a string of difficulties between the council and the department. About a year ago, the council dismissed McAnally's predecessor, Sgt. Charlie Seidl, after he was accused of shooting eight dogs at the local animal shelter without authorization.
Seidl said he was told by former Mayor Roger Purcell to kill the dogs. Purcell denied he ordered the animals shot.
Seidl said he was also fired in retaliation for publicizing a police cruiser's dashboard camera video in which Purcell, who borrowed the vehicle for a trip to Fairbanks, is seen speeding and using its lights to pass traffic.
You don't fire your Chief of Police for shooting dogs; that is just a convenient excuse.
This is anti-authoritarianism.
