The shot isn't mandatory -- they DO give us a choice.
And yes, I knew the shot was the flu -- without its contents though -- it's not just a dead one, but EMPTY. Sort of, exposing your immune system to the flu's dead shell, so that it can recognize the live one. With the problem being that the flu mutates constantly, and the shots have to also be adapted to match those mutations in order to be effective.
Since the 16th century, at least 31 influenza pandemics, which are very widespread epidemics, have been described. The most destructive epidemic of modern times, that of 1918, is estimated to have caused 20 million deaths; in the U.S. about 500,000 persons died, generally following the complication of bacterial pneumonia. Today in the United States, 95 million cases of influenza are reported annually, and it is responsible for about 1,720 deaths each year.

I'll take my chances with the shot...
Although, from what I have seen, if you are a person that has not been getting the shot regularly -- and you suddenly start after years (a lifetime even) of never getting it: you may have an issue. At least, some negative effects from what I'VE seen, have been guys in here that are, say 40-ish or in their 50s, who have NEVER had a flu shot in their life, or not in many years, suddenly deciding to get one (possibly for the first time)... and finding that they get a little sick. This scaring them from any future shots, while those of us that have always gotten them... have no issues.
