Love Note
2/14/19
My dearest love:
I like to think I know the exact moment I fell in love with you. Maybe it was the first time ever I saw you at hists. I was on my way out the door when the music of your laughter filled my ears. So I turned back toward the sound, and there you were surrounded by my brothers from Bachelor's Heaven. You were surely in need of being rescued (August 22, 1963).
Maybe it was one of those pre-dawn walks home to 54th from downtown with all your playfulness. Your laughter always filled the darkness that surrounded us. I can still hear your music in my ears.
Or maybe it was the time we stepped up into the door front of Walgreens during a downpour and stood there holding onto one another for hours, long after the rain stopped. Or maybe it was just in a look we shared one night in some little downtown cafe—Chicken House, Governor's Grill, Cooper's Donut. They've all gone now except in our memories and the love that we found there that we still hold in our hearts.
I remember now when you took my heart—you were that little girl who walked by me and smiled when we were both 16. I'll never forget that smile nor the music from your laughter that still fills my heart to this day.
Thank you for all of the joy. I love you. Happy Valentine's Day.
I'll love you always,
Forever and ever,
Your Steve
