Hey everybody,
I fell off for another minute, but I'm back. I finally accepted the fact that the world turns too fast for me, and there are too many stories for me to add my opinion to. I'm no news service, just a guy in prison trying to stay in touch with the world. But, I am opinionated & I will comment from time to time on the things that mean something to me.
First up:
Kanye West appearing @ Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church in Texas. I love & respect them both so much. For them to recognize each other just gives me immense inspiration & hope. I've always considered Kanye a "conscious" rapper because his honesty & realistic way of pointing out the discrepancies in the way we do our thing, and yet admitting that he is subject to all of the same downfalls. And he mentions God a lot. I've known from his music that he is truly a believer.
It just so happens that I watch Joel Osteens television program every day. Sometimes twice a day. His uplifting messages 1st thing in the morning, not only give me positive vibes to start my day, it gives me an ally in a raging sea of haters. He reminds me that I am who God says I am. And not who a bunch of haters say I am. In this situation, I need to be reminded @ times.
When I began this blog I had only heard that they had plans. But now, I know that it was a great success. I heard that it broke records for online viewing. And it was a standing-room-only crowd @ the Lakewood Church, for Kanye's evening performance. This is something of a dream come true for me, personally. I'm always fantasizing about top-level powerfully, positive, people coming together to do great good; especially rappers. Kanye's endorsement of Joel will help to spread a wonderful, and very spiritual message to people that might otherwise pass it by. And in turn, Joel's endorsement of "Yeezy" will introduce him to Joel's millions of fans worldwide. The new record from Kanye & his awesome new choir - which I can't wait to hear - is bound to abound with the usual clever, insightful & wise-beyond-his-years lyrical magic that made him great, and turned the underdog into the top dog. Only, now, I expect, it will be god-centric. The record is titled "Jesus is king." So they both gain a million new fans. Everybody wins!
Additionally, what Kim is doing is also top-level. Social Justice seems to be @ the forefront of their movement, as well as the driving force behind it. Using her celebrity to shine a light on injustice in the "justice system", is the real live business. God's work, even!
I just hope that Kanye uses the platform to bring people together, in the spirit of working for the common good. But I hope he doesn't get too dogmatic & begin to talk like he's found the one ultimate truth, to the exclusion of all others. I hope he realizes "Jesus is king" for him - and that's alright.
It's such a giant platform. They are changing the paradigm, and the way this generation perceives activism, the justice system, racial disparity, mass incarceration & the use of one's star power (she went right to the president.) And that is a breath of much needed fresh air.
#2 The new movie about Harriet Tubman! I say it's about damn time! Though I still haven't seen the movie, just a review on network T.V. I'm excited & eager, as well as grateful for a more expansive telling of a true story that's never been made enough of.
The telling of her story is as important as allowing anyone, male or female, black, brown or white, straight or gay to run for the office of the president of the U.S.A. Her story is American history. And it speaks to the false stereotypes placed on Afrikan Americans.
Long by MLK had a dream, a million years before the 1st black president, Barack Obama resided in the white house, Harriet Tubman was the template, she was bold, determined & she knew the value of her soul.
