dirt poor

the roof was carried away
by the wind
rain beat on the window
of the old house
cold air came up
through the floorboards
sitting around a kerosine lamp
eating beans and cornbread
cooked on a wood burning stove
the river is beginning to rise
we'll have to move soon

the smell of wildflowers

wildflowers enter my mind
I check the window
staring down at the ground
there are only mud puddles
all the way to the fence
if I'm going to make a break
I'm going to have to swim
through the overflow
from the sewage pond
I smell wildflowers
I look into the sink
There are no wildflowers
at this time of year
only cold and rain
two sheets in the wind
I pour a last cup
look for a puddle to bathe in
while the rain falls
I still smell wildflowers
