On Fruitrude Rd 1953
I shared the dark
with my brothers
it was cold and wet
in the basement
where three little boys slept
we held onto one another
to fight off the cold
always waking together
as the sun came up
we begin to laugh
we survived another night

Prison yard
forgotten souls
of old men
walking in circles
around a track
looking for exits
where none exist

In spite of myself
and all the ear plugs
I put in my ears
I still hear
my brothers singing
that stupid songs
out of key
without a piano
like that child
my heart weeps
in the past
where my memory
takes me back
to those days
when acting a fool
with my brothers
would take away
the cold and hunger
putting laughter in the rain
a smile on a little box face
