Roots
Alex Haley wrote a wonderful book that outlines the struggles of Black America dating back from Africa, to slavery, to the civil war, reconstruction, Jim Crow, into more modern times. The books were turned into a series called "Roots" and it's the most comprehensive, realistic visual of what black culture he's experienced in this country.
Although the "Roots" series in a whole has many powerful focal points, one that stands out to me is the first episode in Africa...There was an importance placed on the value of manhood that has been lost in black culture. To be a man in Africa was to be trusted, respected, admired, responsible, have integrity, wisdom, strength, and understood all the characteristics of fatherhood.
Today the black man is not held to the same standard or assumed to hold the dignity of the title..."Man". The black today has been so separated from his "Roots" that he has fell head first into a self destructive path that perpetuates itself over generations.
"Please" sit with young brothas and watch the "Roots" series...Ask them questions, challenge their minds, show them the adversities many went through to give them the freedoms they have today...show them how to be Man again.
