Between the Bars - Phone Justice

I have chosen to share not only my story but the story of so many here at MCSP! It starts with the Dacne company GTL that automatically puts a block on any phone that's not associated with GTL. This is a hassle because once our loved ones contact GTL through a 1-880 number it still takes time for the blocks to come off. A 15 minute call isn't a real fun 15 minutes. If your call is at 2:00 PM you call your number and then our family has to listen to a message before they can press five to accept the call. With what's left of a 12 minute call there are recorded messages that interrupt conversations (3 or 4). Not blaming the institutions but there have been cases where phones were cut off mid-phone allotted time. There are times when phone calls have to be sacrificed for a month just so we can shop canteen or order packages.! Yes the phone calls are expensive and GTL will even put a block on without warning if the bill hits a certain number. A simple solution would be pre-paid phones which could be monitored. We aren't trying to do anything illegal, just trying to stay in touch with our loved ones. Thank you for taking the time to put the high price of prison phone calls on the front burner.

Respectfully,
Randy

Hi, Randy

I am writing to let you know about Prison Action News, a biannual journal of prisoners' stories of resistance to incarceration. Written by prisoners and edited and distributed by outside volunteers, PAN has about 1,600 incarcerated subscribers across the US. It is a great outlet to both read and publish stories about fighting exorbitant phone prices, or any other oppressive aspect of prison life. If you would like to subscribe to PAN, write to:
