I Am An Atheist
by Jeremy Pinson
Recently a prison guard stood at my cell door for an hour preaching about salvation. I've always disliked evangelical Christians who worry about the souls of others but rarely lift a finger or spare a dime for their fellow man. The next day, being an ass, I told the officer I had just read a book that included murder, betrayal, sodomy, destruction of the planet (twice), and most sinful of all, a whore! As I described such debauchery, he became livid, so eager to preach the muscles in his face were twitching.
I asked him if he'd ever read the book, he indignantly replied, "Highly unlikely, but what is it called?" In a most theatrical fashion, I retrieved my copy of the King James Bible and showed it to him. "Blasphemy!" he screeched and then scurried away in anger.
Rarely have I laughed so hard.
But it was the blind faithful, the capital punishment loving evangelicals, the fetus loving but baby hating Christians who drove me to actually read my Bible—which contains more debauchery, hate, intolerance, and contradictions than any work of fiction I've ever read.
So now I'm an atheist. I believe in helping my fellow man rather than using religion to shame, dehumanize, or manipulate them. I believe in the true message of Jesus, that of charity and love and forgiveness.
So to all the zealots out there worried about my soul who write me letters and preach at my door—vote for Obama or do a good deed!
