Well, I guess I'll be back to teaching later. It would appear my services are again needed. I just got a notice that the education department will most likely need me back to work there about next year, maybe. But I guess some of the other teachers are scheduled to leave and I'll be filling one of those spots.
It won't be so bad. However, instead of just teaching the standard English curriculum, I think I'll request if I could possibly throw in an extra class with a focus on creative writing. A comment in "The Sun" brought up the idea. A reader in the August issue (#428) said regarding a previously published story< "This guy can't be a prisoner. The writing's too good." And I thought why not search out the writer-prisoners and help them polish up their work. A creative writing class could be very interesting, at the least.
I run into a lot of smart and creative individuals that really just don't know what to do with their work. So the class could teach proper submission rules and styles for various publishers. I could even cover a few of the main literary publications like Tin House, The Sun, The Paris REview, and others, just like they do in the MFA programs.
The warden might like the idea.
Things like that keep the prisoners occupied.
