My Biggest Risk

My Biggest Risk

The biggest risk I ever took was pleading not guilty/not guilty by reason of insanity. They offered me a plea bargain of 15 years straight. I refused and went to trial. They convicted me of two charges in a court of law that led to life in prison. The jury found me guilty in spite of a preponderance of evidence to the contrary. My confidence level soared because of this experience. What they meant to crush me, G-d used to remake and build my life and character. My arrest came at the age of 33. I had never been to prison and had a healthy fear of it. In fact, going to prison was on the list of the worst things that could happen to me. It turned out to benefit me greatly.

I am learning so much from my time in prison so far. I learn to trust G-d and my faith grows. He protects, guides, strengthens, and sustains me. My greatest troubles are unable to destroy the relationship my Creator has with me.

Among other trials and tribulations and problems that came with prison, life has been full of wonderful blessings. They flow from the L-rd's grace and mercy. While I was in jail, I watched and comforted men as they faced the same sentence I did. Fortunately, I managed to have moments of joy and happiness at that time. Where other men broke down crying at their plight, I was deep in prayer. I was able to place my confidence in my Master's plans. I was amazed to find myself sleeping well before, during, and after the court experience. G-d's grace was sufficient for me.

Today my life is richer and more fulfilling than I ever dreamed or hoped. I lead a constructive, productive life. I have direction and purpose. Useful activities fill every day and train me for service. There are many times for me to use knowledge and skills I previously attained to help others grow. G-d's glory manifests in my life as I reflect the light and love of Christ in a place filled with much darkness. My risk led to massive growth even when it turned out differently than I had hoped. Taking risks since then got easier because of how this one tragedy worked out to my good.

Someone once told me - he may have been reciting some Biblical passage - that G-d has more thoughts for each life than there are grains of sand on a beach. And your experience confirms this statement. What seemed in the beginning as a painful punishment, became your ticket to knowing the greatest Joy possible and to eternal salvation. You know much more, love much more, LIVE much more than most people have ever done so. Between cheap amusement (movies, video games, &c.) and deep fulfillment ("Shalom" in Hebrew; complete connection with G-d and others), the latter is infinitely better. Quite literally, for cheap amusement disappears at our death, of which no one can predict; while deep fulfillment with our Creator secures happiness here, after death, and on Jesus' return. Keep it up, brother! Continue to imitate Christ and write this blog! Hope to laugh about our earthly times together, some eternal time later in Christ's kingdom.
Your brother in Christ,
