In The Life Of A Connecticut Prisoner Vol. 2 No. 4
By Richard Stevenson

GREETINGS FREE WORLD! The new warden we have now is really taking it to the prison population. As I stated previously, he has reduced the amount of time we spend outside of our cells and reduced the number of times we get to go outdoors to 3 days per week. People are literally going out of their minds. In my opinion he should be held, at least partially, responsible for any violence committed by prisoners either currently or formerly under his authority. Also keep in mind that there is no recreation outside about 6 months out of the year.

Because of this warden's new policies this prison has become more violent. As a result, all D.O.C. employees will be getting unscheduled, permanent raises at next contract negotiations costing the state millions. This clause is found under the Willis Point Factor System in the NP-4 union contract with the state. Add to this the cost of staff going out on comp. responding to fight codes or getting hurt do to the frustrations of prisoners not being able to handle being locked up in their cells so much. Then there is the cost of doctors, nurses, administrative staff and other aides. Then there are the psycho-tropic medications that will be used as coping tools.

So if you hear about something happening here at Cheshire CI feel free to direct the news media to what you are reading or even to me. A D.O.C. spokesperson will tout all the programs afforded inmates here. But what you will not hear is that some of them will only be available to prisoners who are near the end of their sentences. There is a waiting list of up to 2 years for other programs. Most programs are only available to those who haven't had a disciplinary report within a year leaving those who need them the most to stew in their cells to go nuts.

The main way the administration try to keep people like me silent is through facility transfer. They know that this will keep others from speaking out and seeking resolutions to their issues. So if you hear D.O.C. state that an inmate is suing the state because he was transferred YOU know the true reason was retaliation.

Be cool,
Rich.
