Every nation's constitution is a covenant between citizen and government, which is in fact a social contract between the people and their elected officials. Unfortunately for many Americans, that contract has been broken.

So who are "we" when we say "We, the People?"

Article IV, Section 4 of our contract (the United States Constitution) "guarantee[s] to every state in this Union a republic form of government." A republic form of government is a government by its own people through its elected representatives.

So, again, who are the "we" within our social contract that begins by stating "We, the People"? My fellow citizen, you are the "we" in that great contract. It was designed to include you—but just like in 1789, when "We the people" were not included as "all" the people (enslaved people, poor people, and women), in 2016, we still face many of the same challenges. A great number of people remain excluded from the gains encompassed with being a part of this contract.

If you are unable to vote (prisoners) or are disenchanted about voting due to abject living conditions or inadequate opportunity or are dissatisfied about our political process—you are excluded as well.

In an attempt to amplify the voices of the excluded (prisoners, the impoverished, LGBTQ, disenchanted) and display that we matter, the Emancipation Initiative is hosting the Walk for Inclusion and Restoration of American Citizenship.

Our route will be from Ramsey Park in Roxbury to the Massachusetts State House. We hope to achieve from this walk recognition towards issues concerning universal suffrage, criminal justice reform regarding long term, life, and life without parole (LWOP) prison sentences, solitary confinement, equal education and opportunity, and lastly prison reform.

Thank you for your attention and "We" look forward to your participation. Thank you!
