Life's Story

when I was three
I almost drown in the Sacramento
I crawled under the bed to hide
I was not a happy child
I didn't know being poor
everyone was the same
if you're going to the outhouse
it will be dark soon
when I was about ten or eleven
I remember a horn blowing
an arm around me good-bye
I stood in the driveway
watching the tail light disappearing
it was well after dark
before I started to cry
when I was 14 Grampa died
leaving me with no one
to tell me stories
to tell me it would be alright
at 16 I fell in love
she has my heart still today
at 21 I began this life
where I'll remain
until I'm buried
in a potter's field
