Turtle Island News Briefs #2
By Jennifer Rose
The following is what's current in the U.S. Colonial occupied ceded tribal territories of Turtle Island (i.e. so-called U.S.A., Canada, and Mexico).
- The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman (MMIW) Task Force, created by Minnesota state legislature and signed into laws by Governor Tim Walz in 2019, is made up of state and tribal representatives/officials to identify disparities in violence against Native women and girls. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has released the official MMIW Task Force findings, wherein they discovered themes of accountability, uniformity, and accessibility as they studied critical issues contributing to this crisis of colonialist and misogynist gender violence. Task Force findings include: 1. Root causes of MMIW injustices are in colonization. historical trauma, systemic racism, and patriarchy/sexism; 2. indigenous women and two spirit people risk factors are not related to risky behaviors or individual circumstances but are systemic risk factors of poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, sex-work criminalization; 3. investigative, prosecution, and police failures in providing equal or fair treatment to indigenous victims; 4. Insufficient, culturally responsive community-based and publicly funded resources or support for indigenous victims and survivors (Debahjimon, Jan. 2021).
The Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition (and Task Force Vice Chain). Executive Direct Nicol Matthews promises support and 'next steps' to address this public safety issue and "ensure that an indigenous relative are safe?? "Next steps include adequate funding and resources, addressing/confronting systemic racism, create an MMIW Office to provide ongoing focus and leadership to end the societal violence experienced by indigenous women/two-spirits (Debahjimon, Jan. 2021).
President Biden Halts Pipeline Permit. As a first day Executive order, President Biden revoked a permit for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. Biden also plans to move away from fossil fuels/fracking and for the U.S. to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement. #FreeTheLand! (Debahjimon, Jan. 2021).
