Dear Karen,

Thank you for your kind comments on the homage to my granddaughter. She was, and is, very dear to me. I'm so sorry and understand how heavy your heart is over your daughter's estrangement. Offer her your love and let her know when she is ready that gate always will remain open to her. However, understand hate is a very strong rival of love. In The Liberal Imagination, Lionel Trilling wrote, "Where misunderstanding serves others as an advantage, one is helpless to make oneself understood". Misunderstanding serves the master of hatred.

Be clear to your daughter that you love her, you can't change the past, but you do have some control over the future.

Robert
