"The Us Within Us"

Excerpted from "No Air"
A Poetry Collection
by
Johnny E. Mahaffey

Everything around us
was one something else;
and before that
something else, not like us.

Tiny atoms creating... all
that we see. But, this star dust,
it's not quite that simple:
"The universe is made of stories,
not atoms."--
according to poet Muriel Ruykeyser

I agree. Energy is -- after all -- conserved
and... every atom, has a story
or two
one for me & one for you.

Most likely
entangled. "Spooky"
Existing outside of time, unrelative,
in all places, times;
and of all things. The gall!

All of our tiny selves, dancing together
on Universe's multidimensional stage:
without death; without bias; without pain.
Only the music of atomic symphony--
Setting past present and future,
simultaneously ablaze.
