Mama Told Me

Grew up on a dirt road in a trailer house
Cows in the field, horses out back, bunnies
And chickens cooped. We made our own ice cream
Root beer. Killed and butchered beef, pig, deer,
Sheep. Spent the summer hauling hay in family
Fields

Eight generations. It's just now we are chased
Caged. Made to swallow mental illness
Substance abuse. Land being sold off
Slowly

Suicidal because we can't make it manufacturing
Gadgets. In cramped factories. Like an idiot
Drunk stumbling, stoned to the gills because
Livelihoods taken. Making way for more prisons
Cemeteries and gas stations

No patience. Stir crazy at thirty
Buried inside these bricks hepatitis
Sick. Sat on the porch with my BB gun
Shooting robins and woodpeckers. Picking
Waterbugs, rockbugs and asparagus
Out of irrigation ditches

Sitting pissed. Forlorn, seething craziness
At the loss of good people because the Man
The mortgage, the corporation wants
My paycheck

Get off our backs. Out of our heads
Try and make us suffer through
Your bullshit television. Your
Capitalist sermons. Warmongering
Wannabe millionaire mindwash

You've killed our kind already. Graves waiting
Bills for caskets, diggers, greenhouse grown
Roses. Shipped continents. Covering tobacco smells
Whiskey breath. Inside cramped churches. Feet
Shuffling

Have our bodies. Steal our land. Create
Typing heads. Thinking exactly the same

You can't pave the world. You can't burn green!
Alfalfa!!!
