Subject: "Bad Cop"
Last week, we had an idiot CO working on the block. He came through the door looking for trouble, loudly declaring his intentions to screw with us, and how much he hated us. He stood at the front of the unit, in plain view, brandishing a 36" riot stick, while vehemently stating how badly he wanted to use the stick on one of us.
During his rounds to serve breakfast (6:30 am), he banged open every door gate, then dared us to say something. He stirred up a few prisoners, and had a good laugh. He challenged us to file grievances, and instructed us on teh correct spelling of his name tauntingly.
In the yard, he cuffed up a row of 16 prisoners all at once, forcing us to stand out in the cold wearing restraints unnecessarily, as the line to enter the building was moving very slowly. The escorts were only taking in two prisoners at a time. (Normally, we're cuffed four at one time.) When a few prisoners started to grumble, he got in their faces asking if he had done something wrong, challenging them. When no one gave him the satisfaction of a reaction, he challenged them to file grievances against him. Still no reaction, he persisted by getting louder, carrying a dialogue on his own about how there would be a clattering of typewriters pounding out grievances against him; while he continued to get in prisoners faces, goading them to react as they waited in line to go inside.
When we complained to the other guards, they simply shrugged us off and feigned sympathy, claiming there was nothing they could do about him. I believe that the Unit Management was fully aware of his aggresssively antagonistic behavior, and probably encouraged it, because they continue to send him over here.
I feel sorry for this CO Arnold because here stood another black male full of prejudice and self-hatred set out to make other people miserable, and enjoying it.
