"Walk for Hunger"
at MCI Shirley

A Great Success!!!

The 2014 "Walk For Hunger" here at the official Project
Bread "Satellite Site" of MCI Shirley was another great success!
Kudos to the close to 138 men who walked for a total of 1000 miles!
The donations are still coming in but at the time I sit down to
write this piece we are at about 1.500.00! Thank you so much to all
the community supporters who donated as well as the men here behind
the wire who gave so generously of the little they have. Some gave
half of what they had. The Team of Frank Q., Mike S., and Joe L.,
walked a full 26.2 mile marathon; with Mike pushing Joe in a
wheelchair! It was truly inspiring to see and I was proud to walk
the last lap with them and the Parish Council.

It was a cold day but that was overcome by warm spirits and abundant
hearts. So many of the walkers walked both the morning and afternoon
periods and distances like 18, 17, and 16 miles were commonplace. Some
ran their miles, other speed walked, while some just enjoyed a nice stroll
out in the yard with their friend. Those of us who worked the service
team had a lot of laughs and heard some heartfelt stories from the walkers.
Our support team supplied us with stickers and tracking sheets and we
assigned each walker a number and kept track of their miles. We had so
many donations; state reps, advocacy agencies, prison volunteers, family
and friends etc., that it was truly humbling.

This years effort was not plagued by staff interference as past efforts
have been. Sgt. Bitch was no where in site to try to throw a wrench in the
works and even though we did have Coach Woodhead out supervising the yard
he mostly kept his mouth shut and slept off his hangover in the shed. It
appears that the facility, the wild domain of ShiryleyWorld, may finally
be recognizing that our work here is valuable. Hungry folks will be fed
through this effort and men here will build self-esteem which is an
essential element of rehabilitation. It is a win - win for all involved.

The Artful Dodger, our staff leader here, was very supportive as was the
new director of "mis"treatment Ms. Lurking. The administration here
was again a "no show". I guess The Boot and Denied-Oh must have been
planning the festivities for "Correctional Officer Appreciation Week".
The "Stealing Toilet Paper and Condiments" Seminar run by Sgt. Bitch must
have taken priority over feeding the hungry. If the Boot came in she
more than likely could have seen the walk from her high "Ivory Tower" from
which she rules!

A lot of men in the HSU/Sniff wanted to take part. The Service Team
always has spots at the service table for these guys, but none were
allowed to attend. The sick and dying here are ticked away, out of sight
and hopefully out of mind (not out of our minds), up in the death chamber,
so I have to mention that they has sent messages out to take part but the
iron rule of Deputy Denied-Oh would have no part of that. Human dignity
is not part of the ShirleyWorld equation which is designed to demean and
degrade us; this Walk For Hunger is proof positive of how we rise above
the evil and serve our brothers/sisters with a fervor and spirit that
can never be broken!

Please let me finish by again thanking everyone who helped out, in
any way, with this years successful walk. It is still not too late to
donate. You can direct a check directly to Project Bread and just let
them know it is for the walkers at MCI Shirley.
