Going "Home"
By Timothy J. Muise

They say I am going home,
but I have no home,
anything close to that
has long disappeared.

After many long years
it is time to leave,
leave the madness of
a world you would not believe.

Where do I go? And how?
What do I do? And why?
Questions seem to hold
a horrible unknown.

Time waits for none
powerful words to me now.
Soft beds and tasty food
I have not known of late.

Help me if you can
I fear this unknown.
Guide me if you will
I am at your mercy.

Iron Slab
By Timothy J. Muise

18 years on an iron slab
dull pain permeates my heart.
18 years seeking any comfort
my life truly torn apart.

Your words are powerful. The simplicity and directness of your poem "Iron Slab" hit me right in the heart.

Hi Timothy,

Thank you so much for sharing these. Thinking of your first poem, "Going 'Home'" in particular. It reminded me of the saying "home is not a place" - we can create home anywhere. It's the responsibility of those who are not incarcerated to create a home that will be waiting for you when you leave - a world that is welcoming and non-judgmental and wants to give you the things you need to succeed. I will do everything I can to make sure that world is waiting for you. In the meantime, please keep writing!

Timothy - Going "Home" expresses feelings that most people have no idea about unless they've done time. I am a former California inmate who now writes a weekly blog highlighting prison reform matters. Your poetry brings alive the hollow feelings left by doing time and raises serious re-entry issues.

I'm interested in writing a blog that will include Going "Home," and Iron Slab to give my readers the benefit of the well-expressed feelings that your words evoke.

May I have persmission to reprint both your works?

Thank you, and best wishes for a safe and productive re-entry.

Hi, Timothy, I'm an English professor, I teach poetry, and I feel great respect for the power of these poems of yours. The poems and your profile give me hope for you as you face the unknown. I'm wishing you, step by step, just what you need as you find home.
