JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A correctional officer in Mississippi who was fired following allegations he had beaten an inmate has been fired and accused of bringing contraband into another prison.
The Clarion Ledger reported 47-year-old David Johnson was charged last week taking contraband into the Bolivar County Regional Correctional Facility.
The newspaper reported Johnson had been fired from the state penitentiary in Parchman after officials said he was involved in the 2016 beating of an inmate. Johnson was not charged in that case.
Bolivar County Sheriff Kelvin Williams Sr. said he didn't know about the circumstances involving Johnson leaving the state prison. Williams said he would investigate how Johnson was hired.
Johnson faces up to a $25,000 fine and three years in prison if convicted. It was not known if he has an attorney.
