Please excuse my delayed reply to your posting. Prisoners have no access to computers, so Between the Bars has to mail responses to me, then I mail replies to them for posting. Unfortunately, our prison overlords do not share our urgency in mail.
Anyway, I am so delighted you are willing to carry this cause forward; you are a sentient heroine! This punishment driven system not only produces state made monsters, but severely bleeds an already anemic economy. Per year, prisons cost nationwide $63.5 billion dollars, California $14+ billion.
Your latest posting was cut off, so I didn't receive the last part of your message. However, do please spell check the essay [4 pages accompanied] and dispense it [or anything else on my blog] as you please.
Karen, as an old man in prison, I experience first hand the system's insensitivity towards the elderly, but much sadder, I bear witness to very young men coming into this horrid place to be turned into hardened monsters. "REHABILITATION" is nothing more than a rhetorical device, a Potemkin village few are willing to look behind.
