WALKING THE YARD
A FAIR CHANCE PROJECT PROGRAM
Thank you for your interest in becoming a mentor for the "Walking the Yard" WTY program. We would like for you to become one of the WTY mentors on your yard. I'm sending a couple more applications to you, to have copies made (if possible) to pass out to other inmates that want to become involved in this program, either as mentors or students. Like I stated in my previous letter, we'd ideally like a representative from each race (Black, White, Latino, other) to serve as a project leader, but for start-up purposes you can employ the services of whomever you recruit to assist you in getting the program off the ground.
So far, from just that single ad, we have about 325 mentors covering 29 of the 33 prisons in the state (including both Chowchilla and CIW) with more requests coming in every day. So hats off to you for wanting to be a part of something positive that will go a long way in helping someone else.
What we envision here at FCP is that the old time lifers will basically run the WTY program on their individual yards as they see fit. What we know is that every yard can be different and it's the inmates that know who's who and what's what, so as mentors you'll have free reign on "schooling the youngsters" based on the circumstances, situations, and politics at your facility. We have no agenda to pass out and this is not a course. This is just a program by inmates for inmates where you, the mentor, are willing to be available if a kid wants to approach you and talk about the day to day choices/decisions that have to be made in prison life, as well as how best to navigate the pitfalls and avoid some of those dead end runs we all know about.
There's no guarantee these kids will like what you have to say or even listen, but that's ok, just remember who you would have listened to at that age. There's no time period for participation, so a youngster may come for a day or an hour. However long, just remember to listen and be patient. The more open, honest and real you are will probably lead to more trust and a better relationship, because trust will be the deciding factor in how long a person stays.
I really believe that this program can make a difference in how a person does his/her time and maybe, just maybe, keep someone alive and able to see the streets again. For your participation as a Project Leader/Mentor, you will receive a Certificate from Fair Chance Project to take to the Board as soon as we receive evaluation forms from your mentees. I believe, just knowing that you/we are trying to make a difference is the best reward.
Thank You,
Charles F. McCarns III - WTY Coordinator
Fair Chance Project Executive Board Member
