Why We Are Here Today

Timothy Muise 'blew the whistle' against the Norfold prison guards' sex/snitching/blackmail ring. In August he reported the guards actions to DOC administrators and Just Detention (formerly Stop Prisoner Rape) in August. In early November www.SolitaryWatch.com posted a blog about the guard sex/snitching ring. Within 48 hours Tim was thrown in the Hole. He is facing major disciplinary action at a hearing on Monday December 20, 2010. The Doc is using false charges to protect itself and to silence a brave prisoner.

We understand the real intention of Tim Muise's disciplinary ticket to be two-fold. The first is an attempt by the Commonwealth's Department fo Correction to rewrite history in order to cover up the brutal acts of repression it itself committed. The second intent ion is to neutralize prisoners' struggle for survival in the face of systemic DOC abuse.

Tim is not alone. Throughout Massachusetts 'correctional facilities' prisoners are routinely thrown into solitary confinement to keep them quiet about the overt and covert violence inflicted by administrators and guards. Medical neglect and maltreatment is endemic. Air, water and food quality is dangerously substandard. Families are verbally abused by staff during visitation and beyond. Children are barred from visits for whatever a guard deems "excessive" touching of a parent. Educational and program services have been decimated. The DOC is run in secrecy. There is no oversight. The so-called Investigative Services Unit colludes with guards to frame prisoners. It fabricates and destroys evidence to maintain total power.

For the most part, the Commonwealth colludes in the repression. In addition very few volunteers,?!!! chaplains or reform advocates will publicly denounce the state violence, preferring instead to work to redeem and rehabilitate incarcerated people while the Commonwealth's simultaneously brutally depriving them of human and civel rights. Today two volunteer ministers walked right by us and refused to acknowledge our presence or accept our flyers. We must ask; is silence morally justifiable? Is is theologically sound to ignore the most powerful perpetrators while they are battering those one purports to work to "save"?

For decades the DOC has been getting away, literally, with murder. Consultants have been paid for mountains of reports and reviews, all to no avail. Demand that the Governor, the judiciary and the General Court act as the public servants they are supposed to be. Let us not fool ouselves that they (the Commonwealth) will do it without great clamor from us. They haven't yet and matters are getting worse every day. Please-Speak up! Act!

It's time for all of us to use our voices and to stop DOC violence. We mus resist!

Demand for release of Tim Muise, and brave men like Mac Hudson, from the Hole. No retaliatory transfers! Stop the bogus charges against prisoners. Prosecute the guards involved and the DOC administrators who countenance these brutal acts. Establish external, independent oversight. We can do this.

It is possible the the DOC may cancel prison visits for today, with little notice, using 'security' as the pretext. The DOC does not want you to see that others also oppose the conditions under which loved ones are held. Most of us have relatives inside and we would never wish to cause a visit to be lost. (UPDATE: Despite DOC threats to cancel visits. shut down the phone lines and lock-down the prison, we stood our ground. The DOC appears to have backed down
