Blogging for Human Rights Day 1. Dec, 2, 2012

RE: "Blog4HR", Human Rights Day.

It would be easy for me to write nothing but failures in the prison system I am. I grew up in this system, first time in prison I was sentenced to 6yrs at 16yrs old. I was not given many educational opportunities and at 16yrs old I had to fight a lot to earn respect and not get taken advantage of. I came out of prison at 22 with the same mind set. Now I find myself back in prison at age 33, I've been in prison for 7yrs on a 10yr sentence. Both times I was sentenced with no earned time for good behavior. I believe mandatory sentences accomplish nothing but send bitter kids and adults back into society. It doesn't help that certain staff abuse their power and cross the line of professional ethics.

During my time in prison it has stayed pretty much the same, but certain aspects have gotten better. This prison system has set up systems where you can call to report abuse from inmates and staff. We have been allowed recently, better opportunities for visiting our families, such as picnics. I know prisons in other parts of the world make the United States prison system seem like Disneyland, but the amount of prison sentences handed out in our current system sends out a person who feels less than human. I want to get out and help others learn from the mistakes I made, if only this system could help educate myself a little more. I hope this letter helps to shed a little light.

Sincerely
